I just can't resist showing off some of Thailand's delectable cuisine... okay and a cute folded pink bunny. The memory of it is quite amusing and I find myself grinning away at the memory. When the waiter bought it, I asked if he would show me how to fold one. His face was quite comical. It might have been the confusion of calling it a bunny. Perhaps it was one of those obscene language faux pas. We did clear up that it was the rabbit I was referring to but he abruptly said 'I am busy' and scurried away never to be seen again... leaving a colleague to take over our table. You had to be there, the place wasn't that busy and until then he was practically tied to our table grinning at us though our meal. What happened there? I am not sure. I sure just hope I didn't offend him. I was just so excited about my bunny. If it wasn't water logged, I might have rather asked if I could take it home instead.
Thai cuisine is fresh and full of flavour, especially the spicy kind or as its referred to here, 'Thai Style'. When a very innocent looking dish on the menu says Thai Style, expect it to bite you back. As a Thai once told me 'No Chilli... No Power'.
Fresh produce can be found in abundance. If only more ingredients were available in Johannesburg. I'd do a lot more Thai cooking. I'd love to hear where you go shopping for your Thai (Asian ingredients). Popular fresh 'no meat' ingredients feature chilli of course, galangal, lime, kaffir leaves, ginger, fresh turmeric, lemongrass, pomelo, papaya, coconut, cabbage, carrots, mesclun, spring onion, pumpkin, pineapple... and much more. The selection of curious fruit is good exercise for your brain and taste buds. I had a taste of the popular Durian - King of Thai Fruits which has a reputation of being nauseatingly smelly but to confuse the mind it has a delicious custardy flavour. Warning... it is so delicious you won't want to stop eating and they are fleshy and high in calories. A jolly Thai nurse at Kamalaya says she picks up a kilogram each time she has one.
